VirtualDub for Windows Features:

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms (98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista/7), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).  It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video.  It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters.  VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

I basically started VirtualDub in college to do some quick capture-and-encoding that I wanted done; from there it's basically grown into a more general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting to tape or processing with another program.  I released it on the web and others found it useful, so I've been tinkering around with its code ever since.  If you have the time, please download and enjoy.

Needless to say, the real world caught up with me a long time ago and I ran out of time/motivation to update the blog, so it sat stagnant for several years. I've finally gotten around to replacing the old and unmaintained blogging software with a static generator, so the blog is now just plain static pages. The process was kind of hacky -- fetch the existing blog with curl, parse it with a regex script in Python, and feed it to the homegrown not-XSLT generator that I had -- but it works, and now it's UTF-8 (ish) and gzip-optimized.

One unfortunate change is that the comments have been dropped. As part of the conversion process I had to fix the blog posts so use well-formed tags so the static generator could parse it. This took a bit of work for the posts themselves and unfortunately the comments would have been a lot more manual work. The comments had already been shut off for some time due to persistent spam, and this was the inevitable next step. For all that comments on various posts, thank you for the discussions over the years.

The RSS/Atom feeds are also gone. Not much point in having them when I rarely update, and Firefox dropped feed support a while ago (which I'm still sore about).
I'm not sure where I'll go from here, but with the blog converted over to a simple build process maybe I'll post occasionally here again.

VirtualDub for Windows Info:

XInput enables applications to receive input from the XUSB controllers. The APIs are available through the DirectX SDK, and the driver is available through Windows Update.

There are several advantages to using XInput over DirectInput:

XInput is easier to use and requires less setup than DirectInput
Both Xbox and Windows programming will use the same sets of core APIs, allowing programming to translate cross-platform much easier
There will be a large installed base of controllers
XInput device will have vibration functionality only when using XInput APIs
Using XUSB controllers with DirectInput
The XUSB controllers are properly enumerated on DirectInput, and can be used with the DirectInputAPIs. However, some functionality provided by XInput will be missing from the DirectInput implementation:

The left and right trigger buttons will act as a single button, not independently
The vibration effects will not be available
Querying for headset devices will not be available
The combination of the left and right triggers in DirectInput is by design. Games have always assumed that DirectInput device axes are centered when there is no user interaction with the device. However, the newer controllers were designed to register minimum value, not center, when the triggers are not being held. Older games would therefore assume user interaction.

The solution was to combine the triggers, setting one trigger to a positive direction and the other to a negative direction, so no user interaction is indicative to DirectInput of the "control" being at center.

In order to test the trigger values separately, you must use XInput.

Bug in XInput/DirectInput detection sample
MSDN has code to detect whether a controller device enumerated by the DirectInput API is also an XInput device, so that programs can avoid reporting the same controller twice when both APIs are supported:

VirtualDub for Windows Information:

Is VirtualDub free?
VirtualDub is a free and open-source video capture and video processing utility for Microsoft Windows written by Avery Lee.

How to install VirtualDub plugin?
Installing a New Plug-in
Just copy any VirtualDub Filter (VDF) file to the PLUGIN directory at the location where you've installed VirtualDub. Just click on the Load button in the Add Filter box and locate your plug-in.

How to use VirtualDub filters?
VirtualDub filters can be loaded manually by clicking on the Load button that appears in the Add Filters dialog box. They can also be automatically loaded at startup if you copy the . vdf file into a plugins subdirectory under the VirtualDub program directory.

Does VirtualDub work with MP4?
Convert MP4 to VirtualDub compatible format. VirtualDub only compatible with AVI related formats. Even when you use Plugins for VirtualDub, it might not provide a perfect resolution for using MP4 with VirtualDub. Convert MP4 to AVI for importing the MP4 file to VirtualDub or convert AVI to MP4 for more portable devices

Is VirtualDub good?
Although it has many useful features, it lacks some of the more complex editing capabilities of other programs. Because of its ability to do quick linear operations on videos, VirtualDub mp4 has become a popular choice for many people throughout the globe.

Does VirtualDub support MKV?
It can handle 31 different file formats, among them are the popular MP4, MKV, FLV, MOV, RM, RVMB, WMV and TS.
